They devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles and to the communal life, to the breaking of the bread and to the prayers. – Acts 2:42

Almost three years ago I was given the opportunity to unpack this verse over the course of a three-night series with our parish youth revival. That series changed my life. After that event, I was given the opportunity to speak on Acts 2:42 to parish groups, from Georgia to California. And, as I studied, prayed, prepared, and continued to speak, God began to convict my heart. We had lost the spirit of that first community.

The community of believers mentioned in Acts 2:42 were the age of today’s college students.

Did you know the average life expectancy in the Roman Empire, at the time of Christ, was around 35 years? Compare that with our modern American life expectancy of 78 years. Big difference. This means that the people we read about in Acts 2:42, the first generation of Christians, were a lot younger than we might have realized. For the most part, the community of believers mentioned in Acts 2:42 were the age of today’s college students.

This knowledge helps us to understand the “devotion” of that community. It was the devotion of young people. They were a community that was willing to be risky for their faith. Science tells us that up until around 25 years of age people tend to think from the emotional center of their brain, but after 25 the rational part of the mind comes to the forefront. The first generation was a group of young people, who found the freedom of Christ, lived in the Spirit, and gave everything to follow Him. They led with their heart. Christ was “Plan A” and they had no “Plan B.”

Today, the college years are still a time of great passion and of great devotion. Our modern students are seeking after truth and following their passions. But sadly, the typical American “college experience” presents relativism as truth, and the devotion is to self. Our young people are following their hearts, and living risky lives, but in service to what? They are far from devoted to the teaching of the Apostles, communal life of the Church, the breaking of the bread or prayer.

As I studied and spoke around the country, I became more and more convicted. We need to bring the energy, the passion, of that first generation of believers back to the body of Christ. We cannot afford to give up this generation to the “college experience.” It was out of this conviction that 242Revolution Ministries was born.

Through 242Revolution we are making a claim on this generation

Through 242Revolution we are making a claim on this generation, with the mission of bringing the devotion of Acts 2:42 to college students. In addition to the Revolution Conference, we are planning events on college campuses throughout southern California, and regular outreaches in Orange County.
